RHODE ISLAND SARs SCHEDULED FOR SEPTEMBER 27-28th AND DECEMBER 6-7th
"In order to function competently, the health professional needs to be keenly aware of his or her own attitudes, feelings, and judgments about all areas of sexuality, and should have a basic body of knowledge and the skills to address the sexual concerns of the patient, client, or student."(Stayton, 1998)

In the United States and in a number of other countries there exists a stifling aura surrounding sexuality, one that encourages stereotypical attitudes, moralizing, and anxiety. To be effective as a health professional in this context, it is crucial for individuals to expose the myths that are identified with sexual behavior and to replace rash reactions with empathy and professional poise. Recognizing the fundamental importance of such a process, the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists (AASECT) require this type of self-exploration early in the training of human sexuality professionals.

The Institute periodically offers a structured group experience in which the major focus is on a process-oriented exploration of the individual's own feelings, attitudes, values, and beliefs regarding human sexuality and sexual behavior. Health professionals who develop a heightened sense of awareness display greater comfort with and incorporate a broader view of the variety of human sexual behaviors and responses. It is important to note that this process is not personal psychotherapy nor an academic experience where the primary emphasis is on cognitive information.

The process involves explicit films, guest presentations, fantasy, experiential exercises, and guided imagery, followed by small-group discussion.
