Purpose:
The Institute is designed to provide learning opportunities for students, educators, nurses, geriatric staff, pharmacists, coaches, guidance counselors, clergy, parents, and professionals in clinical practice, leading to an expanded knowledge base and integrating human sexuality concepts into personal and professional practice. The Institute not only provides both academic course content and continuing education learning experiences, including a variety of certificate programs, but also allows professionals currently practicing to solidify and integrate knowledge and clinical practice and assists interested individuals in gaining American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors, and Therapists (AASECT) certification.
Goals:
Provide learning opportunities for those interested in sexual health care and education.
Increase knowledge and understanding of distinct aspects of one's personal sexuality and awareness of the diversity in the sexual behaviors and values expressed by others.
Explore the theoretical bases for study in the field of human sexuality and develop a professional approach to using appropriate modalities and practices.
Investigate and apply historical and current research to assure that educational content and practices are timely and relevant.
Critically analyze human sexual ethical issues and develop/use strategies to promote the highest possible standards in this field.
Provide opportunities for intra- and interprofessional relationships which promote dialogue for professional enhancement and supportive collegial relationships.
Critically review and develop strategies to provide input into the process and content of age-appropriate comprehensive sexuality education.
Develop a commitment to support the natural process of growth and development of sexuality and its natural consequences, namely, the healing and revitalization of body, mind, and spirit, the enhancement of personality, the enrichment of relationships, personal empowerment, and the capacity for pleasure, joy, intimacy, loving, and responsibility.
